In my Running Era

I was an active person during my younger days as I always played basketball almost each day, and during my 20s I started getting into lifting weights and even tried mountain climbing. Getting into running was not part of my plan at all.

Late last year, after our annual physical checkup for our company, I received an email regarding being diabetic, so I had some tests and was advised by the doctor to change my lifestyle and lessen food and drinks that contain a lot of sugar.

Since working from home during the pandemic, I did not have any physical activities at all, which is why I decided to try running, as it is now the trend, and I think it is something that I would like to try.

At the end of 2024, I got myself a pair of running shoes from the Nike outlet store in Paseo Santa Rosa and ordered some running shorts and socks online that I could use during my training.

I recall struggling with my first run, which was 3 km, as I had no knowledge regarding running.

I continued to run once a week and improved my stamina and distance. I then realized that running is challenging and fun. I even got a second pair of running shoes, which are Adidas Supernova 2.

I started feeling better, and my body felt lighter and less stiff. I also finished my first 12 km run from our house to Paseo Santa Rosa.

1ST FUN RUN

I told myself that I would register and join one of the local races after MPL Philippines S16 ended. I did register for the Rexona 10 Miler for their Muntinlupa Leg.

The run cost me around 1,800 pesos, which includes the processing and delivery fee for the kit, and I got my racing kit with freebies [10km].

I also got myself my third pair of running shoes, which will be my race shoe: the Adidas Evos SL.

I had a problem before the race, as I committed to attending the Puregold OPM Con 2025 event at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan, which was a day before the race.

I woke up early Saturday so I could arrive before 10 PM in Quezon City for the shuttle to the Philippine Arena. At the Philippine Arena, my brother and I were already standing from 2 PM until the show ended around 10:30 PM, which made our legs and feet tired and hurt. Then I got home at 12:30 AM Sunday, leaving me a few hours to rest before my race in Alabang, where our assembly time was at 3:30 AM.

RACE TIME

I arrived in Muntinlupa around 3 AM. To be honest, I didn't feel tired or nervous. I am really excited for my first ever running event.

I was also joined by a college buddy, Ace, who also registered for the race.

After a quick warmup, the gun time for 10k runners started at exactly 4:30 AM.

I was able to get a personal best for finishing a 10K run despite a lack of rest and preparation. The chewable electrolytes, energy gel, and getting hydrated helped me a lot.

Reaching the finish line felt amazing, and having my first-ever medal is like a mini accomplishment for me.

We also got our freebies after finishing the race and checked the booths in the racing village.

I also bumped with my friend Rizza Diaz who is one of the host of the event with Sir Anthony Suntay. We have worked together in the UAAP and PBA where she is a courtside reporter while I am a photographer for ABS-CBN Sports.

Overall, it was an amazing experience, and I am thankful to God for keeping me safe. I am looking forward to joining future running events if my budget and schedule permits. After the event, I am also more determined to train more and get better.
